The Color Purple on Broadway

The Broadway musical, The Color Purple, based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize winning novel and the film by Steven Spielberg is the story of a woman who triumphs over adversity and finds her voice. The musical is presented by Oprah Winfrey and directed by Gary Griffin.

On April 10, 2007, American Idol Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino will replaced Tony winning actress LaChanze in the lead role of Miss Celie. In the Steven Spielberg film, the role of Miss Cele was play by Whoopi Goldberg. The Broadway production closed in January 2008.

The Color Purple on tour began May 3, 2007 in Chicago at the Cadillac Palace Theatre. Michelle Williams of Destiny Child starred as Shug Avery and American Idol Season 3 finalist, LaToya London starred as Nettie.

The 2005 original Color Purple Broadway cast recording features Allee Willis, Stephen Bray, Linda Twine, Joseph Joubert, LaChanze, Elisabeth Withers-Mendes and Renee Elise Goldsberry.
